[Colombo, 17-07-2023] – The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) successfully organized 'Sri Lanka Aviation Day' event on July 14th, 2023, at the Auditorium of the CAASL.

The Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker was the Hon.Nimal Siripala De Silva, Minister of Ports, Shipping Aviation. Mr.Phillip Goh - Regional Vice President of IATA, Mr. K D S Ruwanchandra – Secretary, Minister of Ports, Shipping & Aviation were the other senior dignitaries present along with senior officials from the Airlines, Airport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka.

The aviation industry has confronted unprecedented challenges in recent times due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The resultant decline in air travel worldwide necessitated a collective effort to rebuild and revitalize the aviation sector. Recognizing this need, 'Sri Lanka Aviation Day' aimed to position the aviation industry for growth and facilitate a vibrant future.

This knowledge sharing event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the challenges faced by the aviation industry and identify opportunities for recovery and sustainable growth. The event provided a unique platform for participants to engage in panel discussions, listen to keynote speeches, analyze case studies, and network with fellow professionals. There were 4 panel discussions conducted throughout the day with the participation of both local and foreign speakers & Moderators sharing insights, strategies, and best practices to foster recovery and strengthen the aviation sector in Sri Lanka. The panels were:

Session 1: Navigating the challenges of air travel in a post-pandemic world.

Session 2: Sustainable Aviation in Sri Lanka.

Session 3: Smart airport development and its impact on the air transport industry.

Session 4: Sharing Aviation Safety Information.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed partner, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), whose invaluable expertise and insights ensured the event's relevance and impact. Their collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka was instrumental in making 'Sri Lanka Aviation Day' a resounding success.

The event's success could not have been achieved without the active participation and support of industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders who attended the event. Their commitment and dedication to rebuilding the aviation industry in Sri Lanka is commendable.

 

Mr. Philip Goh, the Regional Vice President of International Air Transport Association and his delegation paid a courtesy call on Mr. P. A. Jayakantha, Director General of Civil Aviation & Chief Executive Officer at the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka.


The IATA delegates are in town to participate at the ‘Sri Lanka Aviation Day’ hosted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) in collaboration with IATA on 14th July 2023 at the Auditorium of the CAASL.


The aviation industry has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a significant decrease in global air travel. Despite these challenges, there is now a sense of hope and determination to revive and expand the aviation sector as countries recover from the pandemic. In the light of this, 'Sri Lanka Aviation Day' will focus on rebuilding and developing the aviation industry in order to facilitate its growth.


Mr. Rayhan Wanniappa, Actg. Deputy Director General (Cooperate Affairs & Economic Regulation), Mr. Vinoop Goel, Regional Director Operations, Safety and Security, Mr. Azhar Azahari, Regional Manager (South Asia), Mr Albert Ttjoeng, Head of Corporate Communication and Mr. Buddika Hewawasam, Country Manager of IATA-Sri Lanka were also present at this meeting.

 

We are delighted to share that Her Excellency R. Demet Şekercioğlu, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Sri Lanka and Maldives, recently paid a courtesy call to Mr. P A Jayakantha, the Director General of Civil Aviation & Chief Executive Officer (DGCA & CEO), on 7th June 2023 at the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka.

During their meeting, the discussions centered around new business opportunities for Turkish Airlines, and we are happy to inform you that the DGCA & CEO warmly welcomed their proposals. The representatives from Turkish Airlines were highly enthusiastic about the suggestions put forth, and both parties have agreed to further explore these opportunities.

Mr. Fatih Bozkurt, General Manager of Turkish Airlines, also attended the meeting, and he expressed special emphasis on the significance of Sri Lanka as a crucial element of their operations. We are excited to announce that Turkish Airlines aims to commence direct flights from Istanbul to Colombo starting from October 2023!

But that's not all. According to Mr. Fatih Bozkurt, Turkish Airlines intends to expand their flight frequency in the upcoming season, exploring more options for travel between our two beautiful countries.

Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL), the regulatory and controlling body for civil aviation to give effect to the International Civil Aviation Convention and matters connected therewith, recently reviewed its aeromedical examiner’s panel and the recruitment procedure. 

The aeromedical examiners serve those who require licencing to perform safety related functions such as piloting aircraft, air crews, aeronautical engineers and air traffic controllers, certificate holders in various capacities engaged in both the airline industry and that of the aeronautical service providers. This is a mandatory requirement in meeting with the world civil aviation standards. 

Turning into good governance, it is another first in a aviation history that opens up for the aeromedical professionals and well experienced aeromedical practitioners to come on-board, following the new selection criteria, which are openly advertised in print and electronic media.  It has established a process– evaluation of the applications professional qualifications and hands on experience. 

The newly recruited aeronautical medical examiners received their letters of appointment in the hands of Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer, Mr P A Jayakantha.  Here the Director General stressed that there is an urgent need for enhanced aeromedical evaluation process and focus on specialized medical areas, research and to be results oriented.                                                                                                            

The Civil Aviation Authority’s Acting Deputy Director General (Corporate Affairs & Economic Regulations) Mr Rayhan Wanniappa, Head of Aeromedical Section Dr Bimal Dias and the Aeromedical Assessor Dr Nimal Gunaratne was associated with the programme.

 

 

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka) has organized a basic Aircraft Accident Investigation Course with the technical assistance from Cooperative Development of Operational Safety and Continuing Airworthiness Programe –-South Asia (COSCAP-SA).
 
This was a five-day training from 29th May to 2nd June 2023, at CAASL, No 152/1, Minuwangoda Road, Katunayake.
 
The Instructor was Mr. Ismo Aaltonen, an expert in accident investigation who has experienced in accident investigation. He is currently serving as an Aviation Accident Investigation Expert of ICAO since 2019. He had worked as the Chief Air Safety Investigator of Safety Investigation Authority (SIA) of Finland. Further he has strong military pilot background and a Lieutenant colonel from Air Force Academy of Finland.
 
There were total of 32 participants from CAA-Sri Lanka, members of Aircraft Accident &Incident Investigation pool of Sri Lanka, South Asian countries, i.e India, Nepal & Maldives and National Carrier SriLankan Airlines.
